The other advantage that Argos, HMV and The Guardian have over, say, Archant is geography.

As in they haven't got any. Archant, TrinityMirror, Johnston et al have.

Archant can innovate 100%; transform themselves 100%. But if you still can't deliver either in Bury St Edmunds, you're in big trouble... which ain't good news for my Mrs...

And the other dimension is simply implemeting any of it fast enough.

As I recollect, I first heard of HMV's Get Closer being announced in spring 2007 - so the strategy must have been developed several months before that. Yet it took until Dec 07 even for beta testers to be invited. Exactly the same time that Facebook was taking off.

Totally agree. We need to remember that the digital strategy is still a future facing strategy for most, that a lot of people still read those dead trees, and most importantly: online advertising revenue is much smaller (despite growing enormously most of it is not going to newspapers), and advertisers are still very conservative. This is like those people who say everything should be designed for iPhones. A better suggestion would be: how does a newspaper attract advertising revenue online? And if it can't, where else does it go?
